  2. officer in the War of Independence 1775.
  3. Heading a small French-sponsored squadron in
  4. the Bonhomme Richard, he captured the British
  5. warship Serapis in a bloody battle off
  6. Scarborough 1799. Jones was born in
  7. Kirkcudbright, Scotland. He was originally a
  8. trader and slaver but became a privateer
  9. 1775, and then a commodore. After the War of
  10. Independence, he joined the Russian navy as a
  11. rear admiral 1788, fighting against Turkey,
  12. but lost the Empress Catherine's favour and
  13. died in France.
